College Basketball Hot Seat: Next Head Coach Fired Odds

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

As we approach the home stretch of the 2024-25 NCAA men’s basketball season, it’s worth reflecting on which head coaches may soon be handed their walking papers, with several Power Four leaders on the cusp of being fired.

Whether it be a first-time college coach like Mike Woodson of Indiana or an industry veteran like Mike Young of Virginia Tech or Porter Moser of Oklahoma, there’s no shortage of suitors to get that golden parachute in 2025.

With that in mind, BetKentucky.com's Kentucky sports betting experts looked at which CBB coaches are leading the charge to get fired first as March Madness arrives in earnest in just over a month’s time.

Who Gets Fired First?

Our clubhouse leader to get axed first is Woodson, who came to Bloomington after serving as an assistant coach in the NBA From 1996 through 2021, with zero stops in the college ranks prior to that.

In his four-year run at his alma mater, Woodson has posted a 77-47 (.621) record but has yet to advance to the second weekend of the Big Dance, with the Hoosiers sitting at .500 (7-7) in Big Ten play this season and on the cusp of missing the field entirely according to ESPN bracket guru Joe Lunardi, who has IU as his second team out of the field in his most recent update.

Woodson (+350) beats out a sextet of hot seat dwellers right, now with Virginia Tech’s Young and Earl Grant of Boston College (+475 each) and Villanova’s Kyle Neptune (+900) being the other leading candidates to get the boot first.

Young has struggled mightily in Blacksburg, going 101-78 (.564) overall but 9-12 this season, putting the Hokies in line to miss the field for the third time in the five non-COVID-shortened seasons that he’s been in charge of the ACC program.

Grant has faced the daunting task of turning around a listless BC program, going 58-64 (.475) in Chestnut Hill since 2021-22, with zero NCAA Tournament berths in that stretch after leading the College of Charleston to 127 victories in 216 games with the CAA program from 2014-15 to 2020-21.

Neptune has fallen on his face as the heir apparent to Wildcats legend Jay Wright, going 47-42 (.528) in Philly but failing to reach the field of 68 in any of the three seasons that he’s been in charge of the program since coming home from Fordham in 2022.

Other potential firing line enthusiasts include the hot-tempered Bobby Hurley of Arizona State and Moser, who are co-listed at +1100 to get booted next, while Hubert Davis of North Carolina is the longest of longshots, at +1750.

For now, the likeliest coach to get shown the door first this basketball season is the man in charge of one of the sport’s biggest names, as Woodson’s first NCAA job might wind up being his last if the Hoosiers don’t turn things around down the stretch.
