Scottie Scheffler celebrates RBC Heritage win

With the PGA Championship taking center stage in the Kentucky sports betting scene, let's break down the latest odds to win the event.

Scottie Scheffler's second Masters win has consolidated him as the world's best golfer. PGA Championship odds of +350 make him one of the shortest-priced favorites for a major championship golf tournament in recent times.

Who Has the Best Odds to Win the PGA Championship?

It was an exciting 2024 Masters until Scottie Scheffler put the throttle down to become the clear outright winner. He continued in the same vein as one week later he blitzed the field in the Signature Event at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina. Players like Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay were left behind. The Players Championship victor now has five wins in his last eleven starts.

Scottie takes a break going into the CJ Cup Byron Nelson which is a positive for those who like to bet on golf! The world no. 1 has a justified low price for golf majors given he leads all the key stat metrics going into the second of this year's major championships. The "Scheff" is 1st in each category of strokes gained tee-to-green, off the tee, approach, and strokes gained total. It takes a specific golfer to be able to achieve that.

PGA Championship Betting Favorites

Scottie Scheffler (+350)

Scottie Scheffler has gone from strength to strength this year, and back-to-back wins on the PGA Tour seem to be a trend to watch for golf betting enthusiasts. Scottie was the first player to defend the Players Championship and that was the week after winning at Bay Hill. Recently, Scottie Scheffler won the Masters followed by the RBC Heritage.

The American leads the Strokes Gained: Total stat in 2024 and I think that tells its own story as to why he's usually one of the best bets.

The only possible weakness for Scheffler is the putter; he's 94th in strokes gained putting.

Rory McIlroy (+1200)

Rory McIlroy has had a hit-and-miss season so far and another disappointing Masters has been and gone. The season started with a bang on the DP World Tour when Rory McIlroy won in Dubai, but he's been quiet in the big events. The Irishman just won the Zurich Classic with compatriot Shane Lowry so odds are that he's back on course for another big win soon.

The Total Driving stat is key for Rory McIlroy. He ranks 1st in this area and shots off the tee will be a premium at Valhalla for the PGA Championship tournament.

Failing to get up and down from around the greens won't get you into contention in a major Championship, especially if recent previous PGA Championships are anything to go by. Rory is losing strokes to the field in this category in 2024.

Ludvig Aberg (+1600)

Most recently Ludvig Aberg posted a runner-up finish at the Masters golf tournament and is warming up nicely for the 2024 PGA Championship. His golf odds reflect his true chances as PGA Tour golf betting aficionados believe Ludvig Aberg is the real deal. He was 8th in the Players Championship and second in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am having won the RSM Classic late last year, securing a payout for sharp golf bets.

Aberg is said to rival Rory McIlroy in the driving department the big Swede ranks 3rd in Total Driving which will stand him in good stead at Valhalla GC ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship.

Putting from short range is an obvious weakness for the big man and it has cost him in PGA Tour golf tournaments this year. Aberg ranks outside the top 100 in putting from inside 10 feet this year.

PGA Championship Contenders

Brooks Koepka (+2200)

There are plenty of PGA Championship contenders including Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Min Woo Lee, Wyndham Clark, and Jason Day, while Joaquin Niemann should get a spot in the 2024 PGA Championship field.

Brooks Koepka captured his fifth major title having won the previous year's PGA Championship and I like him again this time out as a golf betting pick with PGA Championship odds of +2200. Brooks Koepka has been simmering on the LIV tour this year with an average finish of around 17th.

Koepka's power off the tee has always given him an advantage on beastly PGA Tour and PGA Championship courses. He's currently 12th in driving distance on the LIV Tour.

Koepka is renowned for being an excellent scrambler but this season he is struggling in this metric with an up-and-down success clip of just over 60%.

Viktor Hovland (+2800)

It's been a slow season for last year's FedEx Cup winner so far. Viktor Hovland missed the cut at the Masters and his best finish on the PGA Tour this year is a T19 at the Genesis - very unexpected if you bet on golf. However, betting odds of +2800 are high enough to hope he returns to form ahead of the major tournament.

Tee-to-green play is king at the 2024 PGA Championship and Victor Hovland was 5th in this category last year en route to winning the PGA Tour FedEx Cup.

In 2024 Viktor Hovland is a lowly 133rd in tee-to-green performance which explains his absence from contending for the win or having the lead heading into the final round of a tournament.

Justin Thomas (+3300)

Max Homa or Patrick Cantlay could easily have slotted in here but it's Justin Thomas who gets the nod as a Louisville native and two-time PGA Championship tournament winner. Thomas was 5th last time out at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina after missing the cut at the Masters. Signs of form are good though and a win could be just around the corner in his home state.

Justin Thomas says he has played Valhalla several times and knows it more than most so this will stand him in good stead ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship tournament.

Thomas will have to warm up with the flat stick to justify his 2024 PGA Championship odds; he's currently 156th in strokes gained putting.

PGA Championship Longshots

Dustin Johnson (+5000)

We're now into the longer golf odds players and guys like former champ Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and even Tiger Woods might be worth a look here in various markets. I'll start with Dustin Johnson though, albeit he may not be one of the obvious best bets.

Dustin Johnson has had a mixed bag so far this year winning the LIV golf Las Vegas Event but enduring a woeful Masters with rounds of 78 and 79. Can he bounce back and win the PGA Championship where he's been 2nd twice?

Off the tee for DJ is his strength. He's 10th in driving distance on the LIV tour and the 39-year-old plays with that famed Jack Nicklaus fade needed for the Valhalla Golf course.

Lack of competitiveness is the weak point for DJ. Sometimes he doesn't look up for it but betting odds of +5000 for the major win will look huge if he is!

Nicolai Hojgaard (+8000)

Nicolai has been impressive since his switch over to the PGA Tour. A strong performance of 16th in his debut at the Masters followed a runner-up finish at Torrey Pines earlier in the season. He might be a good outside bet for the PGA Championship.

Nicolai's driving ability is his strength and ranks 5th in Total Driving. The Dane is 1st in approaches from 175-200 yards which is a key metric for the 2024 PGA Championship win. Look for some nice prop bets on Hojgaard.

Despite his obvious golf ability Hojgaard is not hitting enough greens on the PGA Tour, ranking 144th in GIR and losing strokes per round to the field.

Si Woo Kim (+10000)

Si Woo Kim has been flying high under the radar in 2024 with lots of top 30 finishes without really challenging.

Kim is one of the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour and he ranks 4th in strokes gained tee to green which will keep him out of trouble at the Valhalla golf course.

141 is the strokes gained putting ranking for Si Woo Kim and he's poor with the flat stick from short range. This leads to a poor temperament kicking in at times for Si Woo.

PGA Championship Betting Trends: Past Odds of Valhalla Golf Club Champions

YearWinnerPre-Tourney Odds
2014Rory McIlroy+550
2000Tiger Wodds+400
1996Mark Brooks+4000

2024 will mark the 4th PGA Championship to be held at Valhalla. Mark Brooks won the inaugural edition in 1996 and Tiger Woods, amid his domination as a golfer, ousted Bob May in a playoff in 2000. Both players finished on a score of -18 under par for the tournament, five strokes ahead of third place. Phil Mickelson notched a top-ten finish that year.

It's been ten years since Rory McIlroy last secured a major championship tournament success and it was here at Valhalla Golf Club in 2014 where he last hoisted that major title in the shape of the Wanamaker Trophy. The PGA Championship win made it 4 majors for Rory and he pipped that man again Phil Mickelson by a single stroke with a total of -16. Adam Scott and Jason Day were notable top-20 finishers in the tournament that year. Can we expect low scoring again?
